Q&A with Jessica, the Photographer | PHOTOGRAPHY

Over time, my platform has grown through the variety of my creative expressions. Faith is the foundation of my life. Music is a consistent rhythm for my days. Fashion is an expression of my personality, and photography is the gift by which I’m able to capture life and share it with you.

Taking pictures started out as a hobby that grew into a profession (lifestyle/portrait photography). In more recent days, the camera has turned on me with this blogging adventure. Now that Christmastime is quickly approaching (what am I saying?!), my calendar will fill up with beautiful clients who will make more of a frequent appearance on my blog.

Throughout the season, I’ll help you know how to choose a photographer, how to work well with one, what to wear for a family shoot, and give you some everyday picture-taking tips. If you have any topic ideas you'd like to see added to the lineup, leave me a comment below!

We're kicking things off with a Q&A! Whether you know me as a musician, photographer or blogger, today you can get to know Jessica, the photographer. :) The photos featured in this post are senior portraits for the cutest curly-headed human I’ve ever seen, Alex Norris. Enjoy!

Q: When did you become interested in photography?

A: When I was growing up, my mom had an Olympus film camera that resided in our laundry room closet. Somehow, it always found its way into my hands. In my middle school years, I got my first digital camera (in all of its one-inch display glory). I upgraded to a Nikon D40x (and later purchased a Nikon D300) with the intention of photographing my dad’s ministry trips. But somehow, opportunities to shoot friends’ senior photos and family pictures started popping up.

Q: What’s your favorite thing about pictures?

A: Life flies by at such a fast pace. Photography is the only force strong enough to stop the clock. Pictures freeze our moments in time and let us relive the sights and sounds—feelings and emotions—as often as we like—as many times as we wish.

Q: At what point did you start taking pictures professionally?

A: Professional photography seemed to slowly stumble upon me. I was around 17 years old when I started being paid for shoots and became more serious about my hobby. I never set out to make a career of photography, yet the Lord has used it as a meaningful creative outlet in my life.

Taking a picture feels like such a natural response to beautiful moments in life. I find so much fulfillment in doing that for my family as well as others. I honestly cannot imagine my world without such a gift…I still can’t believe I get paid for it.

Q: What kind of camera do you use?

A: Nikon D750, and my favorite lens is a 50mm 1.4.

Q: What's the best time of day to shoot outdoors?

A: I love taking pictures in the mornings and early evenings, just before sunset. The light is beautiful! I also really enjoy overcast days.

Q: What’s the most satisfying thing about being a portrait photographer?

People seem to associate photo shoots with stress. It’s easy to get caught up in all the challenges…from finding the right photographer, to coordinating busy schedules, to organizing outfits and securing a location. However, there’s nothing more satisfying than when…

1.     people leave a shoot with a smile on their faces, saying they can’t believe it was that easy (and that fun),

2.     they receive their images and have “way too many options to choose from,” and

3.     I receive their Christmas card in the mail or see their photos proudly displayed in their home.

These are the “mission accomplished” moments that I live for!

My Instagram Crash & Your VIP Status

I experienced a social media catastrophe this time last week…I lost access to my Instagram account for 5 DAYS! I still don’t understand what happened. All I know is that I recently hit a milestone of 8K followers, which came to a screeching halt when my account was wiped off the face of the digital earth.

Okay, maybe I’m being dramatic. In the grand scheme of life, yes…this is a minute problem, but in my little world, I’ve been pouring my heart and soul into building and growing! 8K was a big deal for my 8-month blog baby. :)

This experience put a lot of things in perspective for me. After all, I had 5 full days to reflect on the many questions I had…most of which starting with “WHY?”

Why did this happen? Why am I pouring my heart and soul into platforms that could potentially crash at any moment? And ultimately, why am I blogging?

Since these are the questions I’ve been answering for myself, I think now is the perfect time to also answer these questions for you—my readers—the ones who are riding shotgun in my adventurous journey.

My Instagram Crash & Your VIP Status

I believe influence is very important. What you allow your eyes to see, your ears to hear and your heart to believe can have a life-or-death impact on your earthly and eternal life. With heartache, tragedies and bad news ever present in our world news, I believe in being a positive influence.

Why? Because I believe every person is very important. You matter, so that makes you a VIP. :)

Losing my Instagram platform of influence for an unknown amount of time meant losing connection with the very important people I interact with on a daily basis. Not only do I love sharing my life with you, but I love jumping into your world, too. I’m not sure if it’s sad, silly, embarrassing or just funny…but regardless, my family knows some of you by name. I talk about what Leah’s doing today, where Brooke’s having dinner tonight and the sweetest thing Ruthie DM'ed me. My social media community has become more than digital to me, it’s personal.

With every passing hour, the thought of being forced to start over with a new Instagram account was ever present last week. I was hoping and praying for my Instagram account to be recovered!

It was day 5 and I was on a flight back to Dallas. When I landed, I turned airplane mode off and my screen loaded up with notifications and messages filled with good news...MY INSTAGRAM IS BACK! Woohoo! I’m so excited to be back on the grams and sharing life again with the VIPs in my world.

I’ll say it over and over and over and over…thank you for joining my journey! I'm so grateful for the support of my friends, faithful followers and blogger buddies...you were all amazingly supportive throughout my week of unknown!

Soon I'll be talking about why I'm blogging. Stay tuned!

From Drab to Pizzazz | 5 Ideas to Turn Your Basic Outfit Into Anything But Boring | FASHION

If you've been picking up on my recent Instagram hints, it's true...I'm headed to Disney World! Gateway Worship leads and teaches at a worship conference called Experience Conference, which happens to be held on Disney property...lucky for us, right?! Work hard, play hard...sounds good to me! I'm sure we'll be squeezing in every bit of fun we can out of being at the happiest place on earth. Keep up with my trip via my Insta Stories and Snapchat (👻 juslikejess).

I don't know about you, but I've been seeing lots of posts on Instagram this weekend featuring WHITE outfits...everyone seems concerned with wearing light colors in the final hours leading up to Labor Day. Well, if that happens to be you, I'd like to take a moment to lighten your load (no pun intended.) Ready? There are far better things to be stressed about than wearing white after Labor Day. While I appreciate tradition, I don't believe in "no white after Labor Day" being a steadfast rule...in fact, I happen to think white is beaaaautiful in the winter. Read more about my personal white rules here. Now we can move on to the look...

Since white does seem to be a topic of discussion this weekend, I present today's look: Mickey meets Labor Day weekend. 😂 This Old Navy jumpsuit (similar here) was a piece I that sat in my closet for several months before wearing, but once I pieced it together with an outfit I loved, it quickly became an outfit-repeater item for me (which is saying a lot!). It's so comfy and makes for a great transitional piece into fall...I'll really enjoy wearing a chunky cardigan or cropped jacket on over it.

I found this clutch at Tokyo Disney, so I couldn't find an exact shopping link, but I included it anyway, because I wanted to show you how much personality can be added to a neutral outfit when paired with a fun accessory. The clutch combined with the pop of color in the sandals made for a much more interesting look than just black and white basics. Below, I'm sharing tips on how to add pizzazz to your basic look, with shopping links too!

Shop the look...

Jumpsuit: Old Navy (similar here) | Kimono: (similar here and here) | Hat: Forever 21 (similar here) | Lipstick: MAC | Sandals: Franco Sarto (found them in black here) | Mickey clutch: Tokyo Disney (similar here and here)

Other black jumpsuit options...

5 IDEAS TO ADD PIZZAZZ TO YOUR OUTFIT:

  1. Add a pop of color
  2. Add a bright lip
  3. Add a statement piece of jewelry
  4. Add a personality purse
  5. Add a hat

The key is to ACCESSORIZE! Build on your basic look with accessories that compliment your outfit. If you're not confident with styling your wardrobe (yet), I'd suggest mixing 2 of my suggestions above...don't go for all 5. :) As you can see in my look, I incorporated 4/5.

5 Instagram Spots in LA | TRAVEL + FASHION

5 Instagram Spots in LA | Travel

Am I the only one that has an unspoken, unofficial Instagram bucket list? For instance, whether it's a cute little place that everyone posts about or an epic spot that I must see for myself, Instagram has helped mold the explorer in me.

In fact, when I find out I'm scheduled to visit a city, or I'm planning a trip, I usually go straight to Instagram and search the location...the most popular Instagram picture-taking hot spots are usually in the "top posts" from that city! Just a little travel tip if you're a picture chaser like me. :)

So you can guess what life was like in LA for me...visiting those Insta hotspots, being a total #tourist. I've included 5 of my favorites, only 2 of which I'd visited before. Enjoy!

1. Pink Wall @ Paul Smith | West Hollywood

We snapped these photos on my 26th birthday, so giant silver foil "26" balloons were a MUST. It was a windy afternoon, though, so my balloons were captured saying 56, 65, and 62...pretty much anything but 26. :) Oh well, we made for a fun memory, that's for sure!

2. Love Wall | Venice Beach

The "Love Wall" by @Jgoldcrown is an art piece I've always wanted to see in person, so this was definitely on my unofficial Instagram bucketlist. :)

*Location: outside the Greenleaf Chopshop in Venice Beach, California (however, there are a few similar pieces around the US)*

3. Bottega Louie | Downtown Los Angeles

Bottega Louie is my standard. I do my best to visit every time I'm in LA! The most beautiful pastry items, including the #1 MACARONS in LA...seriously, Google it. It's true. (Because all things on Google are true, right?) They also have a full restaurant, so be sure to take a visit for dessert, or a full meal if you're in the downtown area!

4. LACMA | Los Angeles

This was my second visit to the LACMA and I'm such a fan of this place! In fact, last time I was in LA, my bestie and I visited Hillsong for Sunday morning church, then ate at Bottega Louie for brunch, then spent the afternoon at LACMA! Slow-paced, open space vibe...the grounds are beautiful to enjoy. Highly recommend!

5. Aflred's Tea | West Hollywood

Alfred's Tea recently made it on my must-do list, since I've been seeing it all over Instagram lately. I expected a line to be out the door, but it was a rather quiet afternoon in this tiny corner tea room. I ordered the rose boba tea and thoroughly enjoyed it. :)

*Tip: they do not accept cash...credit cards only!*

August Instagram Roundup | FASHION

Well hello, hello! It doesn't seem possible for August to be GONE! (Dramatic, but almost true?!) So I just got home from a spontaneous last minute getaway with my mom for my birthday (MANY MORE PHOTOS TO COME) and I must say, I'm not ready for summer to be over. I don't remember experiencing this kinda feeling since high school, but the struggle is real this year. I'm already cold everywhere I go (inside) and just to think about layering up for colder temps gives me the shivers. Is anyone with me? #summerforever

As mentioned in all caps above for extreme emphasis, I did take a ton of pictures while I was on vacation, but I chose not to blog. For us kids that either work and/or play in the digital world, sometimes it can be tough to shut down. As a result, I've been a bit out of sync with my posting routine, but I'm back in the swing of things...just in time to leave town again this weekend!

So here it is! The "I Can't Believe August is Gone" roundup...you can always shop my Instagram feed regularly by visiting jessicasheppard.com > shop > shop my feed OR view previous roundups there!

1 Tee x 5 Ways | FASHION

Good morning and happy Monday! Today's a really happy one for me, because I planned a last minute getaway with my mom...girl trip! So I'm officially in vaca mode and couldn't be more excited about it. When your day starts with lounging in a hammock overlooking the ocean, you know it's going to be a good one. After asking my friends on Instagram where they thought I was headed, I realized how far too predictable I am and I'm totally okay with it. :) If you hadn't already guessed it, surprise...I woke up in Malibu this morning! Plans today start with lunch in Venice Beach with my blogger bud Jenna...who knows what else is in store! You're definitely going to want to follow my Insta story this week!!!

As you know, my wardrobe is all about mixing and matching. It's amazing how one new piece can inspire so many new outfits...I've noticed that even with a new accessory. Sometimes that's all it really takes to quench the shopping craving and spruce up your creativity when you get bored with your wardrobe.

So in today's post, I thought it'd be fun to share one varsity tee ($15) styled 5 different ways! Maybe this will inspire you to dig around in your closet and put some new looks together with things you already have. Or even show how one new piece can keep you from over-spending on new items, while accomplishing the same thing.

Dress Like a Millionaire | FASHION DOTD

I still remember the first dress I bought from Anthropologie...light grey frills...satin on the top half with a lace overlay...chiffon on the skirt bottom...complete with thick spaghetti straps and a v-neck. That was a major purchase! But what I recall even more clearly is rummaging through a rack at disheveled clothes at Forever 21 months later and stumbling onto the a knock-off of the same dress. "Are you kidding me?" My heart sank into my gut.

It's one thing to run into designer dupes like a knock-off Rebecca Minkoff or a Chloe look-alike, but to find almost identical items from stores I shop regularly is a different story! Below I'm sharing my "dupes of the day" (DOTD 😉), where you can purchase the cheapest version of the items, and tips for avoiding being totally duped when adding new pieces to your wardrobe (hopefully avoiding that gut-wrenching feeling I've experienced too many times).

[Click on each item's image to shop]

Shop the look...

Top: Forever 21 | Satin bomber jacket: Forever 21 | Skirt: Last Call | Shoes: ASOS (similar here) | Earrings: House of Harlow 1960 (c/o Rocksbox ((free month trial with code JESSICASHEPPARDXOXO)) | Lipstick: NYX

YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE A MILLIONAIRE TO DRESS LIKE ONE

  1. Do your research. If you're looking to make an expensive purchase, dig around online to see if there's a similar item for a cheaper price.
  2. Have a spend vs. save strategy. Some items are worth the price! These are long-lasting items (think a timeless pair of boots, a fabulous winter coat or a leather jacket). If it's a trendy item that you might not wear for years to come, consider a cheaper option so you have some room for the statement spends.
  3. Know when it's good quality. Just because it's expensive doesn't mean it'll hold up! I've had numerous Free People pieces fall apart on me. Learn how to spot high quality items if you're taking the plunge on a high-priced piece.
  4. Learn to spot the spendy look. I like to shop cheap items that look expensive and mix them with investment pieces. On the flip side, many expensive items don't look expensive. Train your eye to pick the spendy looking pieces from cheap stores. That gives an overall ritzy look without breaking the bank!

Style Recipe: Making Sense of Mixing Trends | FASHION

I'm realizing more and more how much I rely on artistic instinct rather than conscious reason to do what I do creatively. I guess when certain things come naturally to you, over time it just makes sense...until you try to explain it to someone else in simplistic terms and realize how involved it actually is?

When asked to give tips on piano, or photography, or even styling outfits...it can be a challenge because yes...art in general has do's and don'ts, rights and wrongs...but as Picasso said, "Learn the rules like a pro so you can break them like an artist." So how do you explain those exceptions, when to make them, etc.? Did I lose anyone here???

The same goes for outfits...for me personally, they either work or they don't...it's based on a feel, a natural sense...not a step-by-step formula.

Anyway, the foundation for many blogger's success is laying out easy to follow DIY tips...takeaways and nuggets applicable to everyday living! For me, that's a challenge, since the artist in me says the how can't really be explained. The combination of the pieces evoked a certain feeling, fit the mood, the day, the people, the scene, the environment...and how/why would that even need to be explained? Ok, if I didn't lose you before, I probably deeefinitely lost you here.

So below I've taken some notes on how I subconsciously chose to piece this look together--mixing styles and trends--ending up with this look. I've also linked shopping details, of course, along with inexpensive black fringe crossbody bags similar to the one I'm sporting here. (Side note: I picked this particular handbag up at a night market in Taipei, Taiwan...love purchasing souvenirs that translate into my normal life and regular routine at home.)

On to the outfit and my subconscious thought life! And...GO.

Cape tunic: ASOS (similar here and here) | Jeans: ASOS | Choker: Forever 21 | Eyewear: c/o Coastal | Heels: Sam Edelman (similar here) | Purse: similar here and here | Lipstick: I mixed this and this for my nude lip from Bite Beauty

Style Recipe: Mix it up!

  1. Chic Look - Choose a basic with either a structured frame, straight lines or boxy cut--preferably a solid color to fit the clean chic vibe.
  2. Funky Flair - I picked a pair of patched denim jeans for the unexpected funky piece. Any pant or jean that has special detail--maybe embroidered lace, maybe lace-ups around the ankle, or even a patterned harem pant might be cool with this. The cape tunic I'm wearing is actually 1/2 of a set...the original bottom half to the set is featured in this post.
  3. Taste of Trend - These frames came from Coastal and they're a fun combination of chic and trendy. The hard-edged lines make for a structured look, but they feel very modern and trendy. As for the other accessories, the handbag and the choker both have a 70s western vibe to them, which is a popular trend right now! Think fringe, suede, woven bags, double belt buckles, round sunglasses, chokers, neck ties, etc.

Note: In hindsight, the shoes match the vibe of the tunic...there's something high-end about them, but as you probably guessed, that was unintentional. If you want to go for a similar look, be picky about which pieces are funky...too much flair can be FUNKY, ya know? So keeping the heels simple is a good idea for this one if you have an eclectic or unique pant.

Happy styling!

I hope you enjoyed this post...let me know what styles you like mixing when you put outfits together!
